High blood glucose? Benfotiamine may reduce the complications.
Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of thiamine (vitamin B1). Excess glucose in the blood is deposited in nerve cells and small blood vessels of the extremities, causing damage in these areas when this excess glucose forms a substance known as advanced glycation endproducts (AGE). Benfotiamine, a more bioavailable and physiologically active form of B1, may interfere with the AGE’s.
Benfotiamine (S-benzoylthiamine-O-monophosphate) is a derivative of thiamin, belonging to the family of compounds known as “allithiamines.” Benfotiamine is fat-soluble and more bioavailable and physiologically active than thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP), the biologically active coenzyme of thiamin, and stimulates transketolase, a cellular enzyme essential for maintenance of normal glucose metabolic pathways.*
